How the 8th Pay Commission hike is worked out
When the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, your basic pay is multiplied by the fitment factor, and the DA you get today (60% of basic pay) is merged into it and starts again from 0%. So the fair comparison is the new basic pay against today's basic pay plus DA. That is why the hike at the widely quoted factor of 1.92 is 20%, not 92%.
For example, at Level 1 you get ₹18,000 basic + ₹10,800 DA = ₹28,800 today. At 1.92 the new basic is ₹34,560: ₹5,760 more a month, or ₹69,120 a year. At Level 10 (₹56,100 basic), the increase at 1.92 is ₹17,952 a month. Because every basic pay is multiplied by the same factor, the percentage hike is the same at every level; the rupee amount grows with your pay.
What else changes in your in-hand salary
HRA and transport allowance are linked to basic pay, so they rise too, but HRA rates are expected to drop back to 24% / 16% / 8% once DA restarts from 0%. NPS contributions and income tax rise with pay as well. For your exact cell, city and deductions, open the 8th CPC salary calculator (each "In-hand" link in the table opens it with that level filled in). The effective date is not officially fixed; if the new pay counts from 1 January 2026, as widely expected, the gap until it is paid will come as arrears: estimate yours with the arrears calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much will salary increase in the 8th Pay Commission?
It depends on the fitment factor, which is not announced yet. Compared with today's basic pay + 60% DA, the real increase is about 14% at 1.83, 20% at 1.92, 42.5% at 2.28 and 79% at 2.86.
What will the Level 1 salary be in the 8th Pay Commission?
At a 1.92 fitment factor the Level 1 basic pay of ₹18,000 becomes ₹34,560, which is ₹5,760 a month more than today's ₹18,000 + 60% DA. At 2.28 it would be ₹41,040 and at 2.86 ₹51,480.
Is the percentage hike the same for every pay level?
Yes, for basic pay plus DA. Every basic pay is multiplied by the same factor, so the percentage is the same and the rupee increase is bigger at higher levels. In-hand pay differs slightly because HRA, NPS and tax also change.
From when will the 8th Pay Commission salary hike apply?
The effective date is not officially fixed, but the new pay is widely expected to count from 1 January 2026. Since the report is due by about May 2027, the increase for the months before it is paid is expected to come as arrears.
